(RNN) The next generation of NBA stars looks primed to take the torch this season and carry it forward.
The Miami Heat, anchored by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, were ready to break through and declare a new era in the NBA Finals a year ago. But Dirk Nowitzkis veteran-led Dallas Mavericks kept their younger peers from hoisting the Larry OBrien Championship Trophy.
This season, former champions like Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett all in their early-to-mid 30s face a new challenge.
On Christmas Day, teams begin their march through a lockout-shortened schedule. And while they will play fewer games, players will face brutal stretches with fewer days off.
It is a trial made for those without 1,000-plus games of wear on their bodies. The schedule provides a chance for those on the cusp of greatness to push through the regular season and win the 16 postseason games required to make and win the NBA Finals.
The match-ups on Christmas Day not only provide a first look at the best teams and players the league has to offer. They provide a glimpse at those whose time has come, and those whose time has passed.
Boston Celtics at New York Knicks, noon ET:
The Knicks enter the season with high expectations, as Carmelo Anthony begins his first full season with the team. Anthony and fellow All-Star Amare Stoudemire should score lots of points in New Yorks fast-paced offense.
The Knicks added former Dallas Maverick Tyson Chandler this offseason to solidify their low-post defense, and he should play a big role on the defensive end.
The Celtics already-thin rotation suffered a large loss when doctors discovered forward Jeff Green had a heart condition and would need surgery. Bostons Big 3 of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce could be minus Pierce for the season opener.
All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo, the subject of recent trade rumors, will need to produce consistently if Boston has any hope of remaining one of the elite in the Eastern Conference.
Prediction: The Celtics will struggle to keep up with the Knicks offense in front of a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd, even if Pierce does play. New York wins, 96-84.
Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks, 2:30 pm ET:
The Heat should feel more comfortable going into the second season of the LeBron-Wade-Chris Bosh combination. After the departure from his hometown Cleveland team a year ago, King James faced constant scrutiny that appeared to affect him at times, but he remains the most physically gifted player in the NBA.
The offseason pickup of Shane Battier gives the team a solid defender and a player who can knock down 3-pointers.
Dallas completed their title run on the back of Nowitzki, who at 32 years old seemed to find an extra gear. Now Nowitski is a year older and the Mavericks will depend on him more after letting Chandler leave in free agency.
Jason Terry and new addition Vince Carter will keep defenses from focusing too much on Dallass star player if they can score effectively from the perimeter.
Prediction: This could be the most entertaining game of the day. The Mavericks will be fired up from seeing their championship banner raised, in front of one of the most consistently energetic crowds in the NBA.
But the Heat wants to prove it is the best team in basketball, and it may be. Miami wins, 102-96.
Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers, 5 pm ET:
The Lakers looked poised for another title run after agreeing on a trade with the New Orleans Hornets for Chris Paul. Then the NBA, who took ownership of the Hornets last year, declined the deal.
With no Paul and with Lamar Odom traded away, Los Angeles will have to hope it can compete with what appears to be, at least on paper, a lesser team than the one Dallas swept in the playoffs. But if Kobe, Pau Gasol and new coach Mike Brown can coexist, they can still be among the best in the Western Conference.
The Bulls recently locked down their franchise player, Derrick Rose, to a five-year extension. Rose, 23, the youngest ever to win the MVP, led a team that dealt with injuries all season to the top seed in the East.
This year, a healthy Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer could mean Chicagos first championship since Michael Jordan.
Prediction: Rose comes out hot as Kobe spends this game (and much of the season) holding something back for the playoffs.A suspendedAndrew Bynum does not help either. Chicago wins, 88-80.
Orlando Magic at Oklahoma City Thunder, 8 pm ET:
Orlando has been a perennial contender in the East, but their window may be closing fast. Their superstar, Dwight Howard, has openly announced he would like a trade and may be wearing Lakers gold before the seasons end.
With no significant additions to the team, Magic fans will have to hope Jameer Nelson and Hedo Turkoglu can find the same form they displayed when the team made the Finals in 2009.
Oklahoma City has a passionate fan base, a young team that has grown up together and a soon-to-be NBA megastar in Kevin Durant. If he and fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook can play together unselfishly, the Thunder could be championship-caliber for years to come.
Former Celtic Kendrick Perkins joined the team via trade last year. His health has been an issue, but if he can stay on the court. they are the favorites in the West this season.
Prediction: Dwight will get his points and rebounds but have no help from his teammates. Durant goes for 40 points or more. Thunder wins, 110-92.
Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors, 10:30 pm ET:
After the NBA foiled the Lakers hopes of getting Paul, the Clippers, their proverbial little brothers, swooped in and made a deal happen. Now, the elite point guard joins Blake Griffin, one of the best young big men in the game, for the impending highlight-filled season dubbed Lob City.
Griffin, Paul and company are one of the top contenders in the West. Barring injury always a fear for fans of the longtime losing franchise this will be one of the most fun teams to watch this year.
Golden State has long held a similar distinction of putting on a good show. However, they have not been able to translate that into a winning record recently.
Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis are both undersized guards who can score in bunches but do not defend well, and the Warriors could trade one of them before seasons end.
Prediction: If you had to pick a game to go over 220 points combined, this would be the one. Golden State can score a lot but not enough to win this one. Clippers win, 122-109.
