Packers-Lions Series History: Games in Green Bay and Milwaukee (Part 3 of 4)

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Well, people, this is it. We are down to my last two regular season Packers series history posts. Both will cover Green Bays long history against the Lions. This is a continuation of the previous parts of the series, with Part 1 covering the series history in Detroit, and Part 2 covering the teams history on Thanksgiving. Part 4 will be posted later this week.

As many of you know, the Lions havent won in Green Bay since 1991. But what is Green Bays home series against the Lions like? You will find out after the jump.

At present, the Packers have a massive lead over the Lions in games played in Green Bay and Milwaukee. The Packers currently lead the series in home games for Green Bay 53-24-4, with a 1-0 lead in the postseason. Here is some information about the Packers playing the Lions in Green Bay.

The Lions entered the league as the Portsmouth Spartans in 1930, and moved to Detroit in 1934. They won games in Green Bay in 1934, 1938, and 1940, but those were their only wins in the state of Wisconsin until the 1950s. By contrast, the Packers won no fewer than 17 home games over the Spartans or Lions during that same time span. Included in this streak is a game in 1945, where Don Hutson scored 41 points in a 57-21 Green Bay win. The 57 points are still a Packers record for a single game for most points scored in a game.

By 1950, the Lions were becoming a force in the NFL, and they won the next five games in Green Bay and held a 7-1-1 margin over the Packers in Green Bay until Lombardi arrived for the 1959 season. Lombardi won six of nine home games against the Lions, losing two and tying one in the 1967 season opener. Lombardi would complain about the scoreboard clock after that tie, claiming the last few seconds ran off the clock too quickly.

Although the Lions won all three games over the Packers in Green Bay from 1968-1970, neither team could establish dominance in Green Bay or Milwaukee, with the teams trading wins until the 1976 season. In that season, the Packers started a four-game home win streak over the Lions, which ended in the 1980 season when the Lions won 29-7 in Milwaukee.

From 1980-1991, the Lions won 8 of 12 games in Green Bay or Milwaukee but could never establish a solid road winning streak against the Packers. Curiously, in three of the years the Lions won in Green Bay, the Packers won the game in Detroit.

Since 1992, the Packers have won every single game in Green Bay or Milwaukee over the Lions. Most of these games have been blowouts, but the Lions have come close several times to ending the streak. From 2004-2006, the Packers won all three games, but by a combined 14 points, and the 2005 game went into overtime. In 2010, the Lions nearly came back from a 28-14 deficit in the third quarter, but the Packers held on for a 28-26 win at Lambeau Field.

The playoff game is also noteworthy, played after the 1994 season. In this game, the Packers held Barry Sanders to a career low -1 yards on 13 rushes and held the Lions as a team to -4 yards rushing. The Packers held on to win 16-12, but lost to the Cowboys the following week.

What are your memories of the Packers hosting the Lions?

Big games from Howard, Turkoglu fuel Magic 104-95 win over Rockets | Video

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Orlando Magic officials handed Dwight Howard a microphone just before the team tipped off its home opener Monday night against the Houston Rockets at Amway Center.

Howard thanked the announced sellout crowd for their patience during the lockout.

Were going to have another great season, Howard concluded. Lets go, baby!

Over the four quarters that followed, he and his teammates backed up that statement and temporarily erased the cloud created by Howards request for a trade.

Fueled by Howard and strong fourth quarters from Hedo Turkoglu and JJ Redick, the Magic celebrated with a 104-95 win over the Houston Rockets. The victory does not mean Orlandos problems on offense are solved. Far from it. But it showed the team is capable of making progress.

It was huge to get back on a winning streak of, you know, one win, big man Glen Davis said. Weve got a lot to build on from this game. We did some really good things as far as moving the ball. A lot of guys got really comfortable out there.

No one looked more comfortable than Turkoglu, who scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter.

Howard finished with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

But while Howard helped the Magic early on, Turkoglu provided the finishing touches.

He has to continue to be aggressive, and thats going to help our team a lot, Howard said. He understands that. Hes just really trying to get into the flow of the game.

The Magic looked far less inept than they did in their season opener one night earlier, a loss in Oklahoma City.

Orlando shot just 37.0 percent from the field Christmas night, but their shooting improved to 53.0 percent Monday.

To be sure, some improvement was expected, even though the Magic were playing the second game of a back-to-back and the Rockets were playing their first game of the season.

Houston finished last season ranked 23rd in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense.

To fortify that defense, the Rockets signed center Samuel Dalembert on Monday, and early foul trouble from starting center Jordan Hill forced Dalembert into the game about two minutes in.

They have a lot of outside shooters, and you have to stay on them, Dalembert said. Since I have been playing that team for so long, I kind of know exactly what they do, and I was able to really contribute and help out.

Redick, Davis and Jason Richardson also scored in double figures for Orlando, with Redick scoring eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter.

There were times tonight where I thought our movement was good and we got better shots, Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said.

It was still a little sporadic, but it was a big improvement over last night. But theres also a difference in the quality of the defense.

Early in the fourth quarter, a hustle play by Ryan Anderson helped secure the win as Howard sat on the bench getting some rest.

After Davis missed a short jumper, Anderson sprinted in to grab the offensive rebound. Turkoglu received the ball and found Redick for a wide-open 3.

The score put Orlando ahead 84-75 and forced Houston to call a timeout with 8:45 remaining in regulation.

It was a great overall win, Howard said.

But it was the second game. Weve got to continue to get better, and we will.

Ten must-have iPhone games

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Macworld – Scored an iPhone this holiday season? Or perhaps just delicious iTunes Store credit? Weve assembled this list of the best iPhone games; if youre a gamer, these are the must-have apps for your device. Loosen your thumbs, loosen your wallet, and start playing.

Angry Birds Rio – Angry Birds Rio is a sequel to Rovios award-winning physics puzzler, Angry Birds. Though its a tie-in to the animated film Rio, the game is surprisingly compelling in its own right, with dozens of stages to solve and a more polished bird-flinging mechanic. Though the fiendish green pigs are nowhere to be found, merely saving your feathered friends also proves to be a persuasive reason to keep playing.

Dead Space – Malevolent aliens called Necromorphs confront you at every turn in this harrowing action/survival-horror title from Electronic Arts. Adapted from the iconic console series, Dead Space for iOS is a surprisingly intuitive and fun game that proves that your iPhone has a few good scares in it.

Contre Jour – There are few platformers as original and visually distinctive as Contre Jour. Instead of manipulating a character across a variety of obstacles, youre instead tasked with manipulating the ground itself to guide your character to its destination. The apps unique use of contrasting color and lighting also ensures that Contre Jour is one of the more aesthetically pleasing apps out there.

Cut the Rope – The point of this adorable physics-based puzzle game is to help Om Nom the dinosaur eat a piece of candy. Sound simple? Its not. Cut the Rope throws all kinds of tricks and obstacles in your path–including spikes, spiders, and a surprisingly realistic physics engine. While its easy to cut the rope with a quick swipe on your iPhone, timing your actions and planning your moves are the ultimate keys to success.

Infinity Blade – There is no game on the iPhone more epic than the fantasy action title Infinity Blade from Epic Games. Empowered by the graphically stunning Unreal Engine, Infinity Blade lets you see every dodge, slash, and block in brutal detail.

Tiny Wings – There are few games on the App Store as elegantly simple as Tiny Wings. Using a one-touch control scheme, the easily-accessible and brightly-colored app is a breeze to learn, but nearly impossible to master: Guiding your little flightless bird through multiple islands before the sun sets will keep players coming back time after time.

Tiny Tower – Tiny Tower is exactly what it sounds like: You play as the landlord of a small skyscraper who seeks to augment his bustling tower with businesses and citizens. With many different bitizens to satisfy and tons of shops to unlock, Tiny Tower is the definition of time sink.

‘Hunger Games’ Producers Under Fire for Skirting Music Union

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire and the Decemberists are contributing songs to The Hunger Games — but the films soundtrack isnt music to everyones ears.

Ina videoposted on YouTube, American Federation of Musicians union President Ray Hair slams the producers and Lionsgate for recording the score in London instead of with musicians contracted to the American Federation of Musicians union in the US and Canada.

After the union learned Lionsgate had made preparations to record the movies score in London, Hair says he contacted the companys music executives to protest — but the production heads have refused to budge.

There are decision-makers in the business who dont think professional musicians should be compensated fairly, under AFM terms and conditions that are the standard of the industry, Hair says in the video.

Saying The Hunger Games is receiving tax subsidies for filming in North Carolina, Hair says, Its not right for a $2 billion company to go to Europe on taxpayer dollars and deprive … AFM musicians of a decent living. An American movie with American actors and American crews, with a soundtrack thats uniquely American. … Its just plain wrong.

Hair says the movies actors, writers, stage crew and other workers are being paid fair wages, health care, pension contributions and royalty payments according to union standards. But for the musicians? Zero, zilch, nada, he says.

Lionsgate announced Saturday that Swifts Safe amp; Sound will be the movies lead song.

A Lionsgate spokesperson declined comment.

NBA preview: Christmas Day games signal changing of the guard

Monday, January 9th, 2012

(RNN) The next generation of NBA stars looks primed to take the torch this season and carry it forward.

The Miami Heat, anchored by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, were ready to break through and declare a new era in the NBA Finals a year ago. But Dirk Nowitzkis veteran-led Dallas Mavericks kept their younger peers from hoisting the Larry OBrien Championship Trophy.

This season, former champions like Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett all in their early-to-mid 30s face a new challenge.

On Christmas Day, teams begin their march through a lockout-shortened schedule. And while they will play fewer games, players will face brutal stretches with fewer days off.

It is a trial made for those without 1,000-plus games of wear on their bodies. The schedule provides a chance for those on the cusp of greatness to push through the regular season and win the 16 postseason games required to make and win the NBA Finals.

The match-ups on Christmas Day not only provide a first look at the best teams and players the league has to offer. They provide a glimpse at those whose time has come, and those whose time has passed.

Boston Celtics at New York Knicks, noon ET:

The Knicks enter the season with high expectations, as Carmelo Anthony begins his first full season with the team. Anthony and fellow All-Star Amare Stoudemire should score lots of points in New Yorks fast-paced offense.

The Knicks added former Dallas Maverick Tyson Chandler this offseason to solidify their low-post defense, and he should play a big role on the defensive end.

The Celtics already-thin rotation suffered a large loss when doctors discovered forward Jeff Green had a heart condition and would need surgery. Bostons Big 3 of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce could be minus Pierce for the season opener.

All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo, the subject of recent trade rumors, will need to produce consistently if Boston has any hope of remaining one of the elite in the Eastern Conference.

Prediction: The Celtics will struggle to keep up with the Knicks offense in front of a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd, even if Pierce does play. New York wins, 96-84.

Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks, 2:30 pm ET:

The Heat should feel more comfortable going into the second season of the LeBron-Wade-Chris Bosh combination. After the departure from his hometown Cleveland team a year ago, King James faced constant scrutiny that appeared to affect him at times, but he remains the most physically gifted player in the NBA.

The offseason pickup of Shane Battier gives the team a solid defender and a player who can knock down 3-pointers.

Dallas completed their title run on the back of Nowitzki, who at 32 years old seemed to find an extra gear. Now Nowitski is a year older and the Mavericks will depend on him more after letting Chandler leave in free agency.

Jason Terry and new addition Vince Carter will keep defenses from focusing too much on Dallass star player if they can score effectively from the perimeter.

Prediction: This could be the most entertaining game of the day. The Mavericks will be fired up from seeing their championship banner raised, in front of one of the most consistently energetic crowds in the NBA.

But the Heat wants to prove it is the best team in basketball, and it may be. Miami wins, 102-96.

Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers, 5 pm ET:

The Lakers looked poised for another title run after agreeing on a trade with the New Orleans Hornets for Chris Paul. Then the NBA, who took ownership of the Hornets last year, declined the deal.

With no Paul and with Lamar Odom traded away, Los Angeles will have to hope it can compete with what appears to be, at least on paper, a lesser team than the one Dallas swept in the playoffs. But if Kobe, Pau Gasol and new coach Mike Brown can coexist, they can still be among the best in the Western Conference.

The Bulls recently locked down their franchise player, Derrick Rose, to a five-year extension. Rose, 23, the youngest ever to win the MVP, led a team that dealt with injuries all season to the top seed in the East.

This year, a healthy Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer could mean Chicagos first championship since Michael Jordan.

Prediction: Rose comes out hot as Kobe spends this game (and much of the season) holding something back for the playoffs.A suspendedAndrew Bynum does not help either. Chicago wins, 88-80.

Orlando Magic at Oklahoma City Thunder, 8 pm ET:

Orlando has been a perennial contender in the East, but their window may be closing fast. Their superstar, Dwight Howard, has openly announced he would like a trade and may be wearing Lakers gold before the seasons end.

With no significant additions to the team, Magic fans will have to hope Jameer Nelson and Hedo Turkoglu can find the same form they displayed when the team made the Finals in 2009.

Oklahoma City has a passionate fan base, a young team that has grown up together and a soon-to-be NBA megastar in Kevin Durant. If he and fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook can play together unselfishly, the Thunder could be championship-caliber for years to come.

Former Celtic Kendrick Perkins joined the team via trade last year. His health has been an issue, but if he can stay on the court. they are the favorites in the West this season.

Prediction: Dwight will get his points and rebounds but have no help from his teammates. Durant goes for 40 points or more. Thunder wins, 110-92.

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors, 10:30 pm ET:

After the NBA foiled the Lakers hopes of getting Paul, the Clippers, their proverbial little brothers, swooped in and made a deal happen. Now, the elite point guard joins Blake Griffin, one of the best young big men in the game, for the impending highlight-filled season dubbed Lob City.

Griffin, Paul and company are one of the top contenders in the West. Barring injury always a fear for fans of the longtime losing franchise this will be one of the most fun teams to watch this year.

Golden State has long held a similar distinction of putting on a good show. However, they have not been able to translate that into a winning record recently.

Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis are both undersized guards who can score in bunches but do not defend well, and the Warriors could trade one of them before seasons end.

Prediction: If you had to pick a game to go over 220 points combined, this would be the one. Golden State can score a lot but not enough to win this one. Clippers win, 122-109.

Games chief predicts ‘stress areas’

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Nov 15, 2011

There will be “areas of stress” on transport systems during the London Olympics, a Games chief has said.

Big London railway stations such as Waterloo, King’s Cross/St Pancras, Liverpool Street and London Bridge will be particularly busy, Olympic Delivery Authority transport director Hugh Sumner told the London Assembly’s transport committee.

Liverpool Street and London Bridge would have to cope with commuters coming in to work at the same time as Olympic spectators travelled out to Games venues, he said.

Mr Sumner went on: “Will London be a vibrant city next summer? Yes, it will. Will there be areas of stress on the transport system? Yes, there will.”

He said that one particularly busy time would be day three of the Olympics (Sunday July 29), when London Bridge station would be “very, very busy indeed” with the equestrian events going on at Greenwich Park in south London.

London Mayor Boris Johnson’s transport adviser Isabel Dedring said there would be 22 stations that would be “hotspots” during the Games.

She added: “The biggest issue is one of perception. Perception can overwhelm reality. People appear to be oscillating between two alternatives – should they come to London or should they avoid London?”

Asked specifically about London Underground’s (LU) Jubilee line, which will play a big part in taking spectators to Games’ venues, Ms Dedring said: “Have we reached a point where we can say that nothing will go wrong? No, we are not there yet.”

Richard George, transport director of Games’ organisers LOCOG, said spectators had to expect queues for public transport when events finished. He added that LU was “very conscious” of the need to clear people away from the Olympic main site at Stratford in east London at the same time as getting people away from the North Greenwich Arena (the 02 Arena).

Speaking about deliveries during a time when some road restrictions will be in place, Ben Plowden, Transport for London’s director of better routes and places, said: “We are reasonably confident that we will be able to keep London supplied with goods and services during the Games.”

Con Games: Joe Pa and the McQueary Query

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Media shock and awe descended upon Happy Valley this week, but nothing was more shocking than the outcries and outrage leveled against Mike McQueary, the Penn State football teams wide receiver coach and recruiting coordinator — and the whistleblower against Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator now accused of sexual abuse perpetrated upon eight young boys.

McQueary was a graduate assistant in 2002 when he said he saw Sandusky committing unspeakable acts with a young boy in a Penn State shower. Sandusky had retired and was not part of the football program; even so McQueary went to head coach Joe Paterno and reported what he had seen.

Paterno passed the accusation upstairs and his passivity led to his firing as Penn State football coach this week at the age of 84, after 46 years and the winningest record in college pigskin. The president of the school was also deep-sixed this week, and both athletic director Tim Curley and university vice president Gary Schultz were summarily arraigned in District Court in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for perjury and failure to report under Pennsylvanias child protective services law.

All of that is as it should be and the law is probably not done with Joe Pa and the others, despite what the students might say on campus. There is nothing but blame to go around in a case with many young victims that makes everyone cringe.

The one thing that makes no sense whatsoever is the public hanging of Mike McQueary, the assistant with hair so red on the sideline it looks like hes on fire. McQueary has been pilloried and vilified as if he (and not Sandusky) had committed the heinous acts. He has been told he couldnt coach Saturday on Senior Day against Nebraska because school authorities fear for his safety. Talk radio and the blogosphere have been spilling over with the spleen of those who would have McQuearys head.

McQueary has been excoriated for not doing more — for not making more of a stink or stopping Sandusky — though as of this moment nobody really knows if thats true. He has become a scapegoat, as whistleblowers often do.

But the reality of his situation is completely different. Theres a reason McQueary will likely be protected under state whistleblower statutes. In case you didnt get the memo, whistleblowers are brave people who take a risk by telling the truth. Thats the right description for Mike McQueary.

A local boy and star quarterback at Penn State in 1996 and 1997, he began as a graduate assistant, an entry-level job that defines the lowest man on the coaching totem pole. For a graduate assistant to go to head coach Joe Paterno — the most revered man in college football — with such an accusation against the coachs former defensive coordinator took real guts.

By blowing the whistle, McQueary was risking his entire career, a reality that we have seen play out over the last week. Thats what happens to whistle-blowers. They are typically pilloried and vilified for their courage.

We dont have a first-hand account yet of what happened in the shower. In the meantime, the sports cognoscenti should be praising the courage of a local kid at the start of his coaching career willing to risk it all by doing the right thing.

We have more than enough villains without adding Mike McQueary to the list. Americans are always complaining about the dearth of American heroes. Maybe thats because they dont know one when they see him.
