Most Americans Believe Single Motherhood is Bad for Society, Survey Finds

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

If youre a single mother struggling to raise kids on your own, heres another challenge to add to your list: Most Americans disapprove of your lifestyle.

Although there is a growing acceptance or tolerance of same-sex and unmarried couples raising children, most Americans still believe single motherhood is outright bad for society, according to results of a survey released this week by the Pew Research Centers Social and Demographic Trends.

But despite the attitude toward single parents, census statistics show nuclear families today account for barely one in five US households, while the National Center for Health Statistics reports nearly four in 10 births are to unmarried women, the Washington Post reports.

People arent embracing these changes, but they are accepting them, Rich Morin, a senior editor at the Pew Center and author of the report, tells the Post. The days when people were made to wear a scarlet letter or were shunned after a divorce are ancient history.

The survey asked a nationally representative sample of 2,691 adults whether they considered the following seven trends in modern family structure to be good, bad or of no consequence to society:

  • More unmarried couples raising children
  • More gay and lesbian couples raising children
  • More single women having children without a male partner to help raise them
  • More people living together without marrying
  • More mothers of young children working outside the home
  • More people of different races marrying each other
  • More women never having children

When the results were tallied, survey respondents were split pretty evenly into thirds: Accepters (31 percent), Rejecters (32 percent) and Skeptics (37 percent).

The most striking difference between the three groups occurs in their reported attitudes toward single motherhood. Virtually all of the skeptics (99 percent) say the trend is bad for society, while nearly 90 percent of accepters say the increase in single women having children has made no difference or is a good thing for society, according to the survey.

The difference between skeptics and accepters on their views of single motherhood is so great that the two groups would merge into one if that question were removed from the survey, the authors report.

Overall, the three groups of respondents are split as follows:

  • One-half to two-thirds of the accepters say the seven trends make no difference to society; but, of the remainder, more say most of the trends are good, rather than bad. This group is most likely to include women, Hispanics, East Coast residents and adults who seldom or never attend religious services.
  • The rejecters, a similarly-sized group, reject nearly every trend the accepters tolerate or approve of. A majority say five out of the seven changes are bad for society, accepting only interracial marriage and few women having children. They are also the only group in which a majority says its harmful for mothers of young children to work outside the home. This group is overwhelmingly comprised of whites, older adults, Republicans, the religiously observant and married adults.
  • The skeptics, a somewhat larger group, share most of the tolerant views of the accepters, but also express concern about how these trends impact society. However, nearly all of these respondents say single motherhood is bad for society — vs. only 2 percent of accepters who feel this way. However, most say the six other trends make no difference or are good for society. This group is mostly comprised of young people, Democrats and political independents and minorities.

Andrew Cherlin, a Johns Hopkins University sociologist who studies families, tells the Post the poll underscores the widespread acceptance of nearly all types of two-parent families.

Working mothers are acceptable to almost everybody, Cherlin says. Two parents who are unmarried are tolerated or acceptable. But many people, including single parents themselves, question single-parent families. Theres still a strong belief that children need two parents.

But Cherlin suggests that, for many Americans, this opinion is rooted in practical, not moral, concerns.

Theyre concerned about the economic problems of single mothers, and the amount of effort it takes to be a good parent. People arent anti-single mother as much as they are pro-two parents, he concludes.

–For the fourth consecutive game, the Kings neither scored a power-play goal nor allowed one. The Kings went 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. The Kings havent been scoring much on the power play of late, but they also arent getting many chances to score with the man advantage. Entering Wednesdays game, the Kings had generated only six power-play opportunities in their previous 18 games. They ranked 18th in the league in number of overall power plays. The Kings have failed to score a power-play goal in four consecutive games, going 0-for-6.

–This weeks trip to Columbus was something of a homecoming for two Kings players. Peter Harrold is a native of Kirtland Hills, Ohio, which is actually quite far — approximately a three-hour drive — from Columbus. A bit closer to home was Alec Martinez, who attended the University of Miami, Ohio, for three years before leaving to turn pro in 2008. Martinez still attends classes at the school — located approximately 100 miles from Columbus — during the summer and said he is about one semester away from earning a degree.

QUOTE TO NOTE
I dont care how we did it. It wasnt pretty. We had some breakdowns on their goals and stuff, but we got the two points. Thats the bottom line. Weve got to move on. Weve got a game tomorrow weve got to focus on and get ready for, and thats it. Thats all there is to it. If we keep getting points, keep taking care of our business, well be fine. — Kings center Jarret Stoll.

Steve Jobs Has Months To Live? American Cancer Society Cries Foul

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

The National Enquirer has reported that Steve Jobs has only six weeks to live based the papers analysis of photographs that purportedly show the Apple founder. Hogwash.

Even if the photographs are real, the estimate of how much time Jobs has left, or any speculation about his condition, is baseless. You don’t have to take my word on that – you can listen to Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society and a noted oncologist.

“Based on a photograph or even based of a videotape of someone giving a presentation on stage, it is impossible to make an estimation of someone’s life expectancy,” says Brawley. What’s more, he says, it’s not even really possible to make those kinds of estimates after a real exam. “I can’t look at someone’s picture and immediately say they’re sick,” says Brawley.

Nor would extreme weight loss necessarily mean a bad prognosis if Jobs is being treated, Brawley says. Wasting occurs among people who are undergoing chemotherapy – even if the patient is going to get better. And it’s also not always possible to tell wasting from weight loss due to dieting or exercise, either.

Brawley says he has some experience with supermarket tabloids. He was once quoted in one making a prognosis about Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze’s cancer. Later on, he says, another ACS official was quoted by the tab saying exactly the same thing about Senator Edward Kennedy.

As Ive written before, because we all know that Jobs is sick, new information doesnt tell us much about whether he will get well. Theres no excuse that hanging on every bit of Jobs news is material to Apple. Its just evidence of our fascination with celebrity.

Draft Guidance Issued on Capsule Bead Size

Friday, February 18th, 2011

FDA issued a draft guidance for industry on Jan. 18, 2011, about the size of beads within drug products labeled for sprinkle. Beads are often included in capsule products that contain labeling that indicates patients can break the capsule and sprinkle its internal beads on soft foods to swallow (without chewing) as an alternative administration technique. According to the document, this type of administration is common with extended- or delayed-release characteristics. The concern lies in whether patients can swallow the beads with the soft foods without chewing the product. If the beads are chewed, the drug product may be absorbed and released too quickly into the body.

The guidance specifically calls for a maximum bead size of 2.0 mm. This is based on approved product information and human studies that demonstrate food is chewed to approximately 2 mm in median particle size before swallowing. We recognize the specific importance of a maximum size limit for modified-release products, where unintentional chewing of beads may lead to pharmacokinetic differences. It is our belief, however, that maintaining a consistent maximum size of beads for all drug products labeled for sprinkle is prudent. Taste and performance issues that may arise from inadvertently chewing beads labeled for sprinkle may lead to noncompliance and decreased drug product efficacy, states the draft document.

The guidance also provides current FDA thinking on delivering capsule beads via an enteral feeding tube as well as its recommendations on bioavailability and bioequivalence.

In terms of submission information, the draft guidance recommends that bead-size distribution be provided in a common technical document (CTD) application, specifically in section 3.2.P.3.3 (Description of Manufacturing Process and Process Controls) or in section 3.2.P.5.1 (Specification). The maximum bead size can be provided in the CTD 3.2.P.1 (Description and Composition of the Drug Product) section or 3.2.P.4 (Control of Critical Steps and Intermediates) section.

The draft guidance does not apply to bead products already on the market, but only to applicants of new drug, abbreviated new drug, or new biologics licensing applications (NDAs, ANDAs, BLAs). Currently approved NDAs, ANDAs, or BLAs that contain beads that are greater than the recommended 2.0 mm need not modify their product specifications (unless the product has issues that are affecting public health), states the draft guidance. However, an ANDA that references a currently approved reference listed drug (RLD) may propose a bead size equal to or less than the size of the bead used in the currently approved RLD, according to the document. Such data should be provided to support the size(s) of the beads in the ANDA product within a CTD submission.

Comments on the draft guidance are due within 90 days of the documents publication.

Marist Fights Against Cancer and Raises Money

Friday, February 18th, 2011

A world with more birthdays, this is the call that brings American Cancer Society and Marist College students together each year for the largest annual fundraiser and the signature event known as Relay for Life. This year the event will be held on April 15, and the committee for Relay for Life, led by student chair Nicole Dopp, has decided to raise the donation goal to $60,000.

This is the first time we are setting the bar above $50,000, and I really do think we can reach it if we have enough support, Dopp said.

This is her first year as chair, and it is her job to make sure that the entire Marist community is aware of the event and its message.

Relay for Life is a 12-hour-long event during which students set up camp on one of the campus lawns and walk laps around the camping area to stand up against cancer. Students can show their support by donating their own money or by having family and friends sponsor them.

During two ceremonial traditions, the Survivors Lap and the Luminaria Ceremony, participants can honor those who have defeated the disease and remember those who lost the fight. For the rest of the event, there is music and food to sustain the participants and keep up morale.

Relay for Life serves as a community service project for several of Marists clubs. Many of the clubs, including sororities and fraternities, donate money to the event and participate by creating relay teams with their members. The club members take turns walking laps so that the flow of supporters never ceases.

Sororities and fraternities used to conduct the event, but in the 2009-2010 school year, the American Cancer Society and Marist decided that a wider variety of students should be included in the event committee. That year, after the changes were implemented, elections were held to appoint members to the committee.

Dopp chose this years committee by holding an open event during which anyone can sign up to be considered for a position. She chose those who she felt would fit best on the committee. Although sororities and fraternities are no longer on the Relay for Life committee, they still play a major role in the event.
